There is a beast in every barcode

Point your camera at anything with a code on it. A book, a drinks can, a chocolate bar. The beast inside is worked out from the digits themselves, so it is the same creature for everyone, everywhere, forever.

Nothing is downloaded: Its look, its name, its stats and even its cry all come out of the code. There is no server deciding what you found.
Five rarities: Most codes hide something ordinary. Some hide a Legendary, and about one in a hundred and twenty-eight is shiny.

And it will not stay that way

Win fights and your beast levels. Level it far enough and it stops, flickers, and stands back up as something bigger, with longer horns, a harder face and a deeper voice. It keeps its colours and its family name, so it is always the beast you caught.

You cannot see it coming: How many times a beast will change is a secret it keeps. The card shows the next form as a shadow and the rest as a question mark.
It learns as it grows: Every evolution trades a move up for something harder-hitting, and never takes away the reliable one you have got used to.

Prove them

Four beasts. Six elements. Do the maths

The Circuit is a run of seven fights against six elemental guardians and the champion behind them. You lock in a team of four before you start and you cannot change it, which means full type coverage is off the table. Something is going to be the wrong answer, and you get to choose what.

A knocked out beast is out: For the rest of the run. It takes no lasting harm, but it is not coming back to help. There is one heal, halfway, and the hardest band does not get even that.
Three bands, three lineups each: Bronze, Silver and Gold, each with its own guardians at its own levels. Beat one and the next opens up.
Titles you can wear: A hundred and two of them, earned for what you actually did. Beat the Ember guardian and you are the Ember Tamer. Six of the rarest are drawn in gold, and the one you pick sits under your name on your developer card.

Trade a beast or battle a friend over a direct connection between the two phones. No account, no signal, no internet. Just two people in the same room.

Forty badges to earn: For your first shiny, a flawless win, a giant slayer. Your champion picks up bonus EXP for each one.
